Above: Paradise, Michigan / 1971
Early on, I did a lot of bird hunting with a 12-gauge shotgun and a beagle named Justice. We rode around in a big, burgundy Chrysler Imperial and drank cheap brandy when it got cold outside. Now, I spend my time thinking about visual culture, drive a SAAB and drink Stella Artois—and nobody believes I’m from Michigan. Thankfully, I have the pictures to prove it. I currently work at Hornall Anderson, and was previously a professor in the design program at the University of Washington. I hold an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from the University of Michigan. This site is my public notebook to share ideas and explore the territory between theory and practice. Of course, the views represented here are my own and not those of my employer or border collie. And yes, Paradise is a real town in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula—you can look it up.
